Republican lawmakers question the Governor’s letter to Titan Tire’s owner asking for an investigation of rumored sexual exploitation of Bosnian women hired as replacement workers. House Speaker Brent Siegrist, a republican from Council Bluffs, is mulling a run against Governor Tom Vilsack in 2002 and Siegrist questions why Vilsack didn’t take action. He says if the governor truly thought the rumors were substantial, he is my “mystified why the governor didn’t just pick up the phone.Siegrist’s colleague, House Republican Leader Christopher Rants of Sioux City, was more explicit. Rants says if Vilsack suspected abuse, he should have notified legal authorities rather than the plant’s owner. Nine Bosnian woman at Titan Tire recently wrote a letter to Governor Vilsack, saying his action was a form of harassment, and was spreading unconfirmed union rumors.
