Drake gets win despite suspensions

January 18, 2001 By admin

One day after having four players declared academically ineligible, Drake pulled off a stunning victory over Illinois State. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 20-7 lead in the first half, used a 12-3 run in the second half to build the lead to 20 enroute to a 77-68 victory. Normally an off guard, senior Aaron Thomas ran the point and responded with a career high 24-points. He says everyone was ready to play and they had no doubt they were going to win. Thomas says emotion was a big part of the effort.Drake coach Kurt Kanaskie says going into the game the Bulldogs still had confidence. He says they expected to win as they’re still a better basketball team now than they were a few years ago. Kanaskie says Thomas was one of the keys to the victory.
