Former Iowa Lieutenant Governor Joy Corning is giving her alma mater, the University of Northern Iowa, a one million-dollar gift. U-N-I Vice President Bill Calhoun says the gift will be used to establish a lecture series in Corning’s name.Corning wants U-N-I to bring in international leaders from all areas of the world. Calhoun says the lecture series could be once or twice a year, depending on who is available to visit the Cedar Falls campus.They’ve already been discussing some possible lecturers for this fall. Names mentioned already include Secretary of State Colin Powell and author J.K. Rowling.Corning says her 25-years in elective offices prompted the gift. Corning was a teacher in Cedar Falls and then served 11 years on the school board there. She was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1984 and was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1990. Corning served as Lieutenant Governor under Terry Branstad for eight years. She remains active now in volunteer work.
