Iowans may want to check twice before munching cole slaw with lunch.California-based Dole Fresh Vegetables is recalling a batch of cole slaw because it might be tainted with a serious food-poisoning germ called salmonella. The slaw was packaged with a “best if used by” date of February fifth and it was sold in Iowa and 28 other states. The recall came after New York food inspectors discovered a salmonella-tainted container of slaw, though no illnesses are reported. Dole officials say consumers should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Salmonella can cause serious, sometimes fatal, infections in young children, elderly people, and those with weak immune systems. Consumers with questions may call Dole at 1-800-356-3111.
