In an effort to feed Iowa’s needy, an engineering feat opens today in Des Moines that involves building all sorts of structures out of canned goods. The unusual items will be taken apart in another week and all of the cans will go to the Food Bank of Iowa. Sue Wallace, of “In Vision Architecture” in Des Moines, is chairperson of the “CAN-struction Competition.” Wallace says 50 cities across the U-S are holding CAN-struction events to bring in canned goods. This is the project’s fifth year in Des Moines. She says 11 teams are building some very unusual items out of the canned goods. The structures will be built and judged today at Merle Hay Mall. The Food Bank of Iowa serves more than 300 non-profit food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers and homeless shelters in 42 counties.
