As swimming pools across the state open with a splash this holiday weekend, they’re all but a drop in the bucket when compared to the Camp Dodge Pool. The Camp Dodge Pool first opened as a cool refuge for hot Iowans in 1922. Manager Bob Nuzum says there are few pools in the world that can match it.The massive aquatics center is the same size as a football field and can hold three thousand swimmers at once. Nuzum says the pool’s two sand-filled filters are as big as tanker trucks and they process three-point-two million gallons of water. Nuzum is 64-years-old and has a long history with the pool — and may have chlorine in his blood. Nuzum says it’s the third-largest outdoor filtered pool in America and it is, by far, the biggest in the Hawkeye State.
