When coaches say the post-season is a “new” season is may seem like an overused cliche but several baseball teams have taken it to heart this summer. Four teams that will appear in this week’s state tournament are at or below the 500-mark. It includes Davenport West in class 4A. The Falcons downed Bettendorf to qualify for the state tournament, just their eighth victory of the season. West coach Tom Souhrada says a couple of late season wins gave his team confidence, and it’s not the first time they’ve made a late season run.Souhrada says unlikely post season runs are common in baseball, because key hits and pitching can let anyone win.Newton heads to the 4A tournament with a record of 20-and-20. The Cardinals knocked off Iowa City West in the sub-state final.Newton coach Jim Marter says he thought the team was a year away from being a contender. He says conference competition has had a lot to do with their record. He says the loses came to some of the top ranked teams. The state tournament opens Wednesday in Marshalltown and Carroll.
