Hundreds of soybean growers from a dozen states are meeting in Iowa this weekend to learn about new growing techniques, biodiesel and bugs. The sixth annual Midwest Soybean Conference opens this morning at the downtown Des Moines Marriott.John Askew, president of the Iowa Soybean Association, says the opening session speakers include Governor Tom Vilsack and Senator Tom Harkin. Askew says producers who attend the convention will learn much about new developments in their branch of agriculture, such a biotechnology.Tiny bugs called soybean aphids are being found across the eastern half of Iowa. Farmers report significant damage to crops in Allamakee and Winneshiek counties in far northeast Iowa. Askew, of Glenwood, says there will certainly be discussion about those pesky creatures.The conference runs through Sunday. Walk-up registration is allowed. For more information, call 800 383-1423.
