Sophomore looks to step in line for Cyclones

August 23, 2001 By admin

Sophomore Tyson Smith is penciled in to replace standout defensive end Reggie Hayward for the Iowa State Cyclones this season. The former West Des Moines Dowling standout says despite a number of new faces on defense, he expects the unit to remain effective. He says everyone that’s coming has some experience, and that will help.Smith says at this point he is trying to use his speed at the end spot and has gone against offensive tackle Marcel Howard in practice. He says it’s a game of give and take, and he’s working on his technique.Like Hayward early in his career, Smith has had difficulty adding weight and checked in for pre-season practice at 230-pounds.The Cyclones open the season at home on September eighth against U-N-I.
