Iowa’s Comuity of Flags runs out

September 18, 2001 By admin

While many Iowans have rediscovered the thrill of flying American flags in the past week, one tiny town halfway between Iowa City and Des Moines prides itself as being Iowa’s “Community of Flags.” The streets of Brooklyn are -always- lined with flags, not only the Stars and Stripes, but state flags and those of other nations, too.Diane Davidson is manager of Brooklyn’s volunteer-run Community Flag Store, the profits from which go toward keeping up the town’s display of dozens and dozens of flags. Davidson says flag sales are always brisk in Brooklyn, Iowa, as they sell them all through the year. Brooklyn is in Poweshiek County, just north of Interstate 80.
