Groups win grants for special projects

Iowa artists, historians, cultural groups and communities have been awarded “American Spirit Project” grants to chronicle the events of September 11th.A quarter-of-a-million dollars was handed out in 39 grants. Governor Tom Vilsack says there were 91 applications.Vilsack says it gives Iowans an opportunity to celebrate what we have in common — a love for our country.Department of Cultural Affairs director Anita Walker launched the “American Spirit” initiative the week after the attacks in New York and D-C. She says major events in history are always commemorated by artists.Here are the grant recipients: City of Moravia, $480; Cedar Rapids/Marion Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation, $2500; Diana Wooley & Richard Steinback of Sioux City, $4000; Valerie Williams Co-Motion Dance Theater in Ames, $5000; Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre of West Liberty, $3000; Des Moines Symphony Association, $8000; Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce/Downtown Betterment, $3000; Des Moines Playhouse, $10,000; Jonathan Chenette of Grinnell, $3500; Hudson Community School, $2500; Montgomery County Historical Society, $6000; Project Restore Foundation of Des Moines, $10,000; The Drama Workshop of Des Moines, $7000; Michael Luick-Thrams of Mason City, $8000; Scott County Board of Supervisors, $15,000; Phoenix Elementary Early Childhood Center of West Des Moines, $2000; Art Fights Back of Des Moines, $7500; RIADA of Adair, $6000; Iowa Historic preservation Alliance of Davenport, $8500; The History Center of the Linn County Historical Society, $3500; City of Muscatine, $3000; David Dahlquist of Des Moines, $10,000; Cultural Division of the City of Cedar Falls, $15,000; Grout Museum of History and Science in Waterloo, $6000; Dubuque County Fine Arts Society, $4000; Monticello Heritage and Cultural Center, $5000; VSA Arts of Iowa, $10,000; Community Theatre of Cedar Rapids, $7000; Loras College in Dubuque, $7500; Ames Children’s Chorus, $1.050; Bianden Charitable Foundation of Fort Dodge, $9500; Wallace House Foundation in Des Moines, $7000; Helping Services for Northern Iowa in Postville, $5000; Iowa State University Dance/Let Freedom Swing, $8000; Jane Robinette of Urbandale, $7500; City of Mason City Statue of Liberty Restoration, $6000; Hoyt Sherman Theater in Des Moines, $16,000; Jordan Creek Elementary in West Des Moines, $2700; Crestview Elementary School in Clive, $1500.
