Civil rights leaders and some Davenport city officials don’t like a new rule for the 2002-edition of the “Bix Seven” run. Race organizers say only American runners will be eligible to win prize money at the seven-mile race next July. Mayor Phil Yerington and some alderman spoke out against the proposal, as did Bill Cribbs, a local leader of the N-A-A-C-P. Cribbs says denying prize money to foreign runners will eliminate African contestants, including those from Kenya who traditionally do very well in the annual race.
