State officials say they made progress overnight in preventing spilled anhydrous ammonia in Lotts Creek in Kossuth County from spreading.Kevin Baskins of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says they’ve been pumping water out of a dam built on the creek so the contaminated water doesn’t flow downstream. He says they’ve been able to stop the water from flowing over the dam stopped so there’s no contamination into the east fork of the Des Moines River. Crews have been working all week to try and contain the spill. He’s not sure how long they’ll have to keep pumping the water.Baskins says they’ve not been able to tally a dollar amount on the damage yet.He says the largest fish kill from a spill was 586-thousand fish, and he expects this kill to exceed that. All kinds of other aquatic animals were killed, too. The spill occurred when a pipeline broke last Friday.
