January 22, 2002 By admin

A University of Iowa wrestler is in a coma after being critically hurt in a wreck Monday in Cedar County.20-year-old redshirt freshman Ryan Heim, of Dubuque, suffered head injuries after losing control of a van 20 miles east of Iowa City on Interstate 80. Heim was returning from a wrestling meet at Ohio State with two teammates, John Gillespie, a junior from Ohio and Charles DeVetter, a redshirt freshman from Omaha. Leo Heim, Ryan’s father, was also in the van. The other three men were all treated for their injuries and released. University of Iowa wrestling coach Jim Zalesky addressed the team Monday and said he let everyone know what was going on. Zalesky says the next 72 hours are important for Heim. He says there’s not much they can do but support Heim and his family.Troopers say a semi-truck hit Heim’s van after it spun out of control.
