Democrats lose fight over road money

April 4, 2002 By admin

Democrat lawmakers have changed their minds and will support democrat Governor Tom Vilsack’s proposal to take 58-million dollars earmarked for road construction and, instead, use it for schools.House Democrat Leader Dick Myers of Iowa City says Iowans want more resources spent on children rather than concrete. Myers says democrats want to use the 58-million to ensure teacher salaries don’t get cut, buy new computers for schools and maintain community college budgets at last year’s level. Republicans like House Majority Leader Christopher Rants of Sioux City say the democrats’ proposal will endanger road construction projects. Rants asks which road project they want legislators to put on hold.Rants says road construction is an economic stimulus, and he says republicans are spending enough on schools. The House debated the subject this afternoon, and republicans prevailed.
