Asian-Americans in Iowa say they should speak with one voice. Leaders announced this week the formation of a new statewide alliance.Kim Poam, executive director of the new “Iowa Asian Alliance,” says there are more than a dozen ethnic Asian groups in the state, but they’ve never worked together. Poam says the alliance will help them gain recognition and clout, and also promote Asian business. Poam says the alliance can also be a resource for the non-Asian community. She says the board has lots of experience and members have links to their homeland countries that can help establish connections with business leaders in Asia. Former Governor Robert Ray led the welcoming campaign.Ray says the Asians wanted to give something back to the community. Ray says Asian-Americans have already filled much-needed jobs in the ’70s, then turned around and started their own companies, creating jobs for others. Their website is www.asianalliance-dot-com.
