Iowans ready for National Spelling Bee

May 29, 2002 By admin

Three young Iowans will take part in the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee starting this morning in Washington D-C. 14-year-old Katie Boring of Rockford won the state spelling bee back in March. Anne Webber, her coach at the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock school district, says Boring is dedicated. Webber coached another Rockford student in the national bee in 1997, so she’s been able to offer advice to Boring about the atmosphere of the competition.Boring will be joined by Mattias Gassman of Ames, who placed second at the state spelling bee, and Jessica Lieb of Dubuque. Tomorrow’s finals rounds of the national spelling bee will be carried on ESPN-2 from 9-to-11 A-M and from noon to 3 P-M.
