The University of Northern Iowa unveiled an updated sports logo today that features a modern-looking panther mascot under the school’s name. UNI Athletic Director Rick Hartzell says the new logo’s been in the works for a while to update the image that represents the Cedar Falls school. He says the old logo was 15 years old and needed to be improved to reflect a more modern look. Hartzell says the reaction to the new logo has been positive thus far. He says the biggest change is focusing on using the “University of Northern Iowa,” compared to just “Northern Iowa” on the old logo. It also features a panther that appears to be flying across the logo. UNI women’s basketball coach Tony DiCecco helped create the new logo. DiCecco feels it’ll be a popular with Panther fans and athletes. He says it’s very modern and streak lined, he says it’s “kind of like a re-birth” for the school and he’s excited to get it on merchandise and uniforms. A company that produces licensed products for the UNI developed the new logo at no cost the college. UNI Panthers home page.
