Supervisor of Duane Arnold says nuke plant is prepared for anything

June 3, 2002 By admin

The new man in charge of buildings and grounds at Iowa’s only nuclear power plant says he’s confident the plant is ready for anything. Mark Peifer is the new site vice president for the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Palo. Peifer says they hear a lot of concerns over the safety of the plant. He says there hasn’t been a “credible threat” against any nuclear power plant in the country. Peifer says they do get “advisories” from the government. He says the advisories say the potential is there, but there’s not been a credible threat against a plant. He says one of the public’s fears is a terrorist flying a plane into the plant like they did the World Trade Center towers. Peifer says the hijacked plane scenario is highly unlikely now with all the increased security at airports. The plant has been designed to withstand hits from small plans and storms, but no one really knows what would happen if a large plane hit the plant. Peifer says they do know they’d be ready to respond to any attack.
