You can wet a line and learn a life-long activity this weekend anywhere in the state today through Sunday. It’s the Department of Natural Resources annual free fishing weekend, and any Iowan can fish without a license. D-N-R fisheries bureau chief, Marion Conover, says the idea is to introduce new people — young and old — to the sport of fishing. While no license is required, all other rules regarding catch limits and fish size are still in force. He says you can get a book containing the rules and regulations at any place that sells fishing licenses. Conover says you don’t need a lot of gear or other stuff to enjoy fishing. He says people of all ages can fish, as you don’t have to jump real high or run fast to participate. Conover expects lots of people to take advantage of the free fishing weekend.Conover says 800-thousand Iowans fish already — half of them are kids who don’t legally need a license.
