Congressman Leonard Boswell met with central Iowa cops, firefighters, National Guardsmen and emergency management officials this morning to solicit ideas for the new, federal “Homeland Security” agency. Boswell is a member of the U-S House Intelligence Committee which is reviewing the President’s proposal to consolidate homeland security tasks in one agency. Boswell says there’s a horrendous amount of electronic intelligence pouring in, and there’s not a central clearinghouse for the info. Des Moines Police spokesman Kelly Willis told Boswell cops have some concerns about how information about the latest terrorist threat is passed along.Willis says cops feel frustrated and caught in the lower levels, when police are often asked to be the first-responders to a threat. Other officials asked Boswell to ensure that hospitals get federal funds to better prepare for a terrorist attack.
