UNI thrilled to play Iowa again

July 1, 2002 By admin

Iowa and U-N-I have decided to renew their rivalry in women’s basketball after being dormant for the last two decades. U-N-I coach Tony DiCecco says he can’t wait to play the Hawkeyes — neither can his players.DiCecco says the Iowa game probably will be a very emotional one for his team, which is fighting for recognition. He says they know that the major programs in the state are Iowa State, Iowa and Drake, but they’ve not had the chance to play the Hawkeyes. He says every little kid that grows up in the state thinks of playing for or against those top programs.Di-Cecco says the level of play at all four of Iowa’s Division One schools has greatly improved in the last decade. The series was dropped after the 1983-84 season when the Hawkeyes became a national power under then-coach Vivian Stringer, but Northern Iowa still leads the overall series 11-8.
