One versus two showdown set tonight in Marshaltown

July 5, 2002 By admin

What could be one of the top high school baseball games of the regular season is tonight in Marshalltown. Class 4A top-ranked Council Bluffs Lewis Central travels to meet the second-ranked Bobcats. Marshalltown senior Jeff Clement set the national high school home run record Wednesday, clubbing the 71st dinger of his career. Lewis Central coach Lee Toole says that may take a little edge off the game with a little less pressure on Marshalltown, but he says his team has been looking forward to the game. Toole’s team took over the top ranking three weeks ago, and he says they’ve handled that well. He says they talked about it when they first became number one and talked about how they could quickly drop, depending on how well they played. Not only will the game feature the two top rated teams — Toole will send pitcher Jake Hansen to the mound — likely making it a matchup of the state’s two best players. Toole says Hansen could be the top senior left-hander in the state, and maybe the top left-hander overall.Toole says they go into the game without first hand experience of what the Bobcats offer as they don’t play each other. Council Bluffs is 29-3 overall while Marshalltown is 30-5. Their single game is at 7:30.
