Legislation making English the “official” language in government has been debated for years in Iowa and nationwide, but a University of Northern Iowa professor says we should all learn a -foreign- language. Maria Basom, head of U-N-I’s Modern Languages Department, says for starters, speaking a second tongue can make our resumes look better.Basom says people who only speak English are missing out on a whole world of knowledge and interpretation. She says people need to challenge themselves and widen their scope of comprehension by learning a new language. She says learning a foreign language makes us better citizens and allows us to better understand our neighbors and our world. Basom says there are other benefits, as studies find that students who study a second language function better in reading and writing English.July is National Foreign Language Month.
