A central Iowa man left today on a long journey to help disaster victims on the other side of the globe. A typhoon hit the tiny western Pacific island of Guam last week and since it’s a U-S territory, the American Red Cross is responding. John Neldeberg is the Iowa Disaster Specialist and will be helping victims of the storm recover.He’s a government liaison for the Red Cross on this mission. He’ll be working with the local governments to make sure service are being provided effectively and relaying concerns back to the agency’s administration. Neldeberg says there were no reports of anyone being killed in the severe storm, but there were injuries and many homes damaged or destroyed.Neldeberg’s worked several disasters, most recently, the World Trade Center site in New York. His assignment in Guam is expected to last three weeks.
