Newman advances to state again

Top-ranked Mason City Newman Catholic upended Sentral of Fenton 7-0 last night in Mason City to advance to the Class 1A State Baseball Tournament in Carroll next week. Newman coach Tony Adams is happy his team is back in the state tournament.Newman played errorless baseball despite three of their starters missing in the lineup.Adams is happy that eight Newman seniors will be making a return trip to the state tournament as he says it’s not an easy thing to accomplish.Junior pitcher Ben Lewerke struck out four and held Sentral to four hits. Lewerke has won three of the four tournament games so far and pushed his record to 11-0 for the season. Lewerke says his team wants to go further than last year’s semifinal Newman team.Newman improves to 39-2 with the win, while Sentral finished the season with a record of 24-8.
