3A and 4A teams take diamond at state

July 25, 2002 By admin

The Class 3A and 4A teams are on the diamonds today at the state baseball tournament.Knoxville got homers from Brian Joynt and Adam Miller, as the Panthers put up 14 runs in a 14-to-four, five-inning victory over Perry. Knoxville scored three runs each in the first and second innings and six in the third as they cruised to the victory. In the Class 4-A opener, Marshalltown’s Jeff Clement hit home runs in the first and third innings to lead the Bobcats to an eight to three win overBettendorf. The two homers raise Clement’s national-record career home-run total to 75. Clement was intentionally walked in the fifth inning when he came to the plate the third time, but Clement’s coach, Steve Hanson, understands the move as he says they risked giving up runs, or loading up the bases with the two, three and four hitters coming up.Clement later scored and Hanson says the runs in the fifth made him feel better. Clement got another hit to go three-for-three at the plate and also pitched six innings for Marshalltown. Hanson was relieved to get the win.Marshalltown next will play the winner of this afternoon’s Council Bluffs Lewis Central/Des Moines Roosevelt game. Marshalltown is 35 and 6 on the season. Bettendorf finishes the season with a 24 and 17 record.
