Tornado hits across the border from Nebraska

July 25, 2002 By admin

A small Nebraska community, just across the Missouri River from Sioux City, was hit with a likely tornado early this morning. Jefferson was also smacked with a twister almost one year ago — on August 18th. Jefferson resident Lowell Berkley says the storm was intense, especially the hail that was golfball size in some areas. Berkley, who runs a convenience store in Jefferson, remembers last year’s storm well.Irwin O’Neil lives in Jefferson but his son lives in Willis, a few miles upriver and also right across the water from Sioux City. O’Neil says his son had even worse damage.Last year’s tornado demolished Jefferson’s school and ten houses, while injuring several people. NO injuries are reported in today’s storm.
