Fans grapple with parking problems at State Wrestling Tournament

February 27, 2003 By admin

The state high school wrestling tournament opened in Des Moines with a new format. A fourth day was added and their will be more sessions this week. Alan Beste of the Iowa High School Athletic Association says it is part of a plan to alleviate congestion in and around Veterans Auditorium due to construction of the Iowa Events Center next door. He says they lost over half the emergency exits to the building, so they had to do something different. Beste says the amount of parking has been dramatically cut and the best advice for fans is to be patient. He says the parking maxes out early and the best bet is to park in a ramp and take a shuttle. Beste says time your arrival at Vets to give yourself the best chance to find a parking spot. He says they allow and hour to an hour and a half between sessions to let people clear out.Beste says it is a problem they don’t mind solving he says it’s a great problem to have to have 80-thousand people who want to come to the state tournament.
