Alford pleased with progress made this season

March 25, 2003 By admin

The Iowa basketball season ended last night with a buzzer beater in Iowa City. B.J. Elder’s shot in the lane with point-three-second’s remaining as Georgia Tech downed the Hawks 79-78 in the second round of the N-I-T. Chauncey Leslie led Iowa with 27-points.Iowa coach Steve Alford says it was one heck of a senior year for a terrific person. He says it was a great group to coach. Iowa finished 17-14 and Alford says with added talent the Hawks should take another step forward next season. He says the junior class has to get better and tougher and learn to play at a higher level as they become seniors, as they’ll be challenged for playing time by the new players coming in.Alford felt a great deal was accomplished this season, especially considering all the off the court troubles last summer. He says it was a step forward after a disappointing year last year.
