Union officials say a weekend assault on a guard at the Clarinda correctional facility underscores the need for additional staffing at prisons. Guard Colleen Strong was knocked unconscious by a prisoner in the special needs unit of the prison. The Iowa Department of Corrections says there was a normal number of guards on duty at the time of the assault. Some 500 jobs have been cut in the state prisons.
