Mason City police bust up C-D pirating ring

June 3, 2003 By admin

Mason City police have taken the lead in busting a compact disc pirating ring. Officials say an officer’s telephone call about a suspicious C-D bought in Mason City has led to the seizure of more than 215-thousand illegal C-D’s in Iowa, Florida and Arizona. Investigator Dan Wellen says the case started last year with an unhappy customer who brought a C-D to the police station. Wellen called the Recording Industry Association of America. He learned he was dealing with was a bootleg disc, which involves the unauthorized recording of a live performance. The association says the Mason City case allowed officials to stop a large pirating operation which was producing illegal C-D’s with a street value of more than one million dollars.
