It’s ice cream, not fireworks for a Le Mars Fourth of July

July 4, 2003 By admin

The northwest Iowa community of Le Mars claims to be the ice cream capitol of the world, and works to maintain the title every Independence Day weekend. Rachelle Gotto, spokeswoman for Le Mars’ Ice Cream Days festival that’s now underway, says the town’s population usually doubles for this event.Le Mars’ population is about ten-thousand and the Ice Cream Days festival often draws as many as 20-thousand people. Gotto says a golf tournament is starting off the day today (Friday) at 8 A.M., to be followed by the community’s big parade, which she says is one of their biggest-yet.There’s also a big fireworks show planned for tonight (Friday) at 10 P.M. Among tomorrow’s (Saturday) big events is the Golden Kernels Air Show at noon. Le Mars is the home of two Wells-Blue Bunny ice cream factories, which churn out many hundreds of thousands of gallons of ice cream every year. For more information, surf to “www.lemarsiowa.com”.
