Drivers on I-80 near Des Moines did a doubletake early this morning when a semi heading westbound lost its load of styrofoam bundles. Department of Transportation Highway Maintenance Supervisor Pete Wonder says another semi hit one of the bundles, and it exploded all over the place. While Dallas County officials were able to get the larger chunks off the road, Wonder called out a snowplow to get the smaller pieces that were blowing around. Wonder says it kind of looked like “blue snow” blowing around. Wonder says it took about an hour to plow the styrofoam into the ditch. It’s not the first time snowplows have been seen in warm weather this year. Wonder says a truck load of strawberries spilled onto the roadway, and a snowplow was used to clear the fruit away. He says strawberries “really fly” when you hit ’em with a snowplow. Wonder says this morning’s styrofoam snowstorm did not cause any major traffic problems.
