Iowa State loses game and top running back

September 29, 2003 By admin

Iowa State coach Dan McCarney says running back Hiawatha Rutland is out for the season after suffering a knee injury in Saturday’s loss at Northern Illinois. McCarney says the injury unfortunately ends Rutland’s career. Rutland is one of several Cyclone players who have been injured in the early part of this season. McCarney says it is the down side of coaching football as he says he gets very attached to players and it tears his heart out to see them go down with an injury. With Rutland out, freshman Stevie Hicks will back-up Michael Wagner when the Cyclones host top ranked Oklahoma on Saturday. McCarney says Hicks looks like he’s back to 100 percent after battling an injury, and McCarney says his playing time will increase.
