The arraignment hearing is this (Monday) morning in Shelby County for the western Iowa woman accused in the shotgun slaying of her spouse. 36-year-old Dixie Shanahan of Defiance is charged with first-degree murder for allegedly killing her abusive husband, Scott Shanahan, and hiding his body in a bedroom for more than a year. Shanahan’s lawyer is expected to enter her written plea of “NOT guilty,” and it’s still not clear if she’ll actually appear in court. Shanahan has received financial support from across the country, as donations from people as far away as Rhode Island helped pay the bail money to free her from jail. Shanahan was NOT given custody but HAS been granted visitation rights to see her three children, ages seven-years-old, five-years-old and eight-months-old. After today’s arraignment, there will be a pre-trial hearing on November 24th, and the murder trial itself is scheduled to start January 27th.
