UNI center suffers broken hand

February 24, 2004 By admin

The U-N-I basketball team may be without senior center David Gruber when the Panthers visit Drake on Wednesday night. Panther coach Greg McDermott says Gruber suffered a broken hand in Saturday’s win at Wisconsin-Green Bay. McDermott says the break in his left hand was detected on Monday and Gruber is in a cast. McDermott says they’re researching all alternatives to see if Gruber can play with a soft cast. He says that depends on his level of pain. He says an x-ray Sunday didn’t show the break, so they took him in for a bone scan, which found the break.McDermott hopes the injury does not keep Gruber sidelined during the stretch run of the season. He says as bad as he feels for the team, he says he feels more horrible for Gruber. He says Gruber has done so much for the program and he says Gruber had been counting the last exciting days of his career. He says Gruber is a big part of the good play they’ve had recently.U-N-I is 9-6 in the Valley and 15-9 overall.
