Iowa City ranks high on gay scale

A publication due out next month ranks Iowa City fourth in the U.S. in its number of same-sex households, for a city under 200-thousand people. The “Gay and Lesbian Atlas” compiled by demographers Gary Gates and Jason Ost uses 2000 census data to conclude that Johnson County and Iowa City have the highest number of same-sex couples in the state. The authors say it’s not coincidental that Iowa City’s a college town, saying they tend to be more accepting.
