The state health department says West Nile Virus has been found in more Iowa counties. So far this year, there have been only three human cases of the mosquito-borne disease in Iowa, and one person’s died from it. One county’s found a horse with the virus and 17 confirmed it in the blood of birds, using cages of sentinel chickens checked regularly for the virus. But the season for the disease, spread by a late-summer variety of mosquito, is mostly still ahead of us. By the end of the August-September peak last year, Iowa had recorded 147 cases of West Nile in humans, including six deaths.
