Former Independence coach faces sex abuse charge

A former eastern Iowa coach is facing a sexual abuse charge. Former Independence High School assistant girls basketball coach Michael Shannon is accused of sexually abusing one of the players. The 35-year-old Shannon is charged with third-degree sexual abuse after allegedly having sexual contact with a 14-year-old member of the junior varsity basketball team. Shannon is not a teacher, but had been coaching at the school for the past three years.
