Organizers of this weekend’s 21st annual Trek Fest expect an attendance boost after the town of Riverside was featured in a reality TV show earlier this year. The town that claims it’s the future birthplace of Captain Kirk, hero of T-V’s “Star Trek,” is holding its usual parade and Trek tractor pull, but this year, Riverside Mayor Bill Poch says there are bus tours of the tiny town’s many hotspots. The bus tours will visit the sites featured in the Spike TV network’s production called “Invasion Iowa,” along with local stars signing autographs. There’s a costume contest in categories including Star Fleet officers and Klingons. Poch says the popular space-age swap meet is also back. There are booths full of Star Trek paraphernalia, where you’ll find everything from phasers and stick-on Spock ears to fuzzy tribbles and C-Ds full of Star Trek sound effects.
