Michelle Wie finished the opening round at the John Deere Classic under par. Wie fought back from four bogeys on the front nine with two birdies to finish the back nine in 34 and an opening round total of 70. The 15-year-old is trying to accomplish what no woman has done yet, make the cut at a PGA Tour event. She says she was a little shaky and “made a lot of stupid bogeys”.Wie recovered after a shaky start, and said she had an “awesome” back nine, hitting every green. Wie says she feels more comfortable and hopes to go out and play better Friday. It sounds strange coming from a 15-year-old but Wie said she would not have been able to overcome her slow start when she was younger. She says making two bogeys in a row would’ve made it tough to recover, but she says she has a lot more experience now and knows what to expect. Considering the way it started Wie was happy with the opening round. She says she still wants to shoot a lower score, but is happy the way it turned out. One of her playing partners was Scott Gutschewski who finished one shot behind her at even par. He says it’s impressive for a 15-year-old to come out and do what Wie is doing. He says he doesn’t know many who could do it. Hunter Mahan fired an eight-under 63 to take the lead into today’s second round.
