A man who’s riding his bicycle cross-country to raise money for cancer research rolled through Denison on Thursday. 42-year-old Dan Buckley started the journey in May in his homestate of South Carolina and is headed for Oregon. Buckley says his trek is part of a much bigger tradition. The Relay for Life has been going on worldwide for 20 years in some 24 nations during May, June, July and August and has raised more than one-and-a-half billion dollars so far. The effort in the U.S. is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and Buckley says he wanted to challenge himself. In Denison, Buckley visited residents at an elder-care center before heading west. He says anyone can make a difference — seniors, kids, anyone. He says “A lotta’ people don’t know what they can do until they put their mind to it. When you have to do something or when you convince yourself this needs to be done and once you set a goal for yourself, people can do a lot more than they think they can.” Buckley has been traveling about 30-miles a day, on average, on his quest for the West Coast.
