Western IA teen dies, another injured in early Sunday roll-over

August 8, 2005 By admin

A Western Iowa teen was killed and a Central Iowa teenager injured during an early morning rollover accident in Pottawattamie County, Sunday. Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker says the accident occurred on a gravel road north of Carson, just after 3:30 a.m. Sunday. According to the Sheriff, the vehicle was headed northbound on 400th street out of Carson, near the intersection of Elm Tree Road, when it went out of control as it rounded a curve and rolled. Danker says the driver of the car — 18-year old Jason Hagen, of Oakland — was partially ejected from the 2002 Pontiac Grand Am he was driving, and the vehicle rolled on top of him. Hagen was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt. A passenger in the vehicle, 17-year old Kelly Eckhart, of Boone, suffered minor injuries, but climbed out of the car and reported the accident to authorities. The Sheriff says it’s not known if alcohol played a role in the crash. An autopsy was performed, but the toxicology results had not yet come back, and the accident remains under investigation. Danker says his daughter worked with Hagen at a home improvement store, and like others in the community, she’s having a hard time dealing with the loss.
