An eastern Iowa soldier who’s been home just four months in the past three years has volunteered to go to help hurricane victims. Specialist David Schick of Cedar Rapids is headed to the hurricane zone with about 200 other Iowa Guard soldiers. “I guess just with everything that’s happened down there, I just feel it’s the right thing to do,” Schick says. “If I can make a difference down there, you know, in terms of the people down there and the quality of their lives, I think I’ve done my job.” Schick just returned to Iowa a couple of months ago after a tour-of-duty in Afghanistan, but he volunteered to go back on duty to serve Americans who’re in trouble. “People living under conditions like things were in the Superdome, all those people there and you know, lack of toilets, lack of showers, lack of water,” Schick says. “People were just getting sick from that.” Schick expects to be on duty in the hurricane zone up to three months.
