A Minnesota man is dead after drowning Saturday in a quarry in north-central Iowa. The Worth County Sheriff’s Department says 20-year-old Derek James Olson of Albert Lea Minnesota was swimming with friends at the north pond in Kuennen’s Quarry Park on Saturday afternoon, a popular recreational spot just southeast of Northwood. Olson went under at about 3:30 P.M. and failed to resurface. Divers from the Mason City Fire Department dive team recovered Olson’s body more than an hour after he was last seen. It’s at least the 29th drowning death in the state of Iowa this year…more than double the number of drowning deaths in the state last year, and a state record.
