Man shot dead by Council Bluffs police during chase

October 26, 2005 By admin

Council Bluffs police shot and killed a man during a chase Tuesday that left two officers injured. The incident started when police tried to arrest 33-year-old John Bothwell for outstanding warrants. Bothwell fled on foot and ran into the enclosed drive-through bay of a liquor store. Once inside the bay, Bothwell carjacked a vehicle and used it to pin an officer to the wall. Another officer then fired at least once at Bothwell. Bothwell was struck and killed by the gunfire. Police are not saying how many shots were fired or which of the four responding officers fired the shots. The officer who was pinned to the wall suffered a broken leg. A second officer suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at a Council Bluffs hospital.
