A former eastern Iowa coach faces possible jail time at his sentencing next month after entering a plea on sex abuse charges. 35-year-old Michael Shannon of Independence has pleaded guilty to eight counts of third-degree sexual abuse in connection with incidents involving a 14-year-old female high school student. The incidents allegedly occurred in March of this year. Shannon had worked the last three years as the assistant girls basketball coach in Independence, and the girl was a member of the junior varsity basketball team. Shannon is scheduled to be sentenced on December 20th. He faces a maximum of ten years in prison on each count.
