Le Mars bakery to close

December 29, 2005 By admin

A long-time Le Mars business is shutting down. For more than 70 years, many Le Mars-area residents have started their days with fresh donuts and rolls from the Vander Meer Bakery. Pete Vander Meer started the business and his son, Pete, Junior, continued the Dutch bakery, adding specialty breads to the line of baked goods, cakes, cookies, candies and other confections. Owners Mike and Angel Anderson of LeMars announced plans to close the 71-year-old business this Saturday. The Andersons, who bought the bakery in 1997, declined to be interviewed by their local radio station and released a written statement about the sale earlier this week.
