Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he has no suspicions about the weekend shooting accident involving Vice President Dick Cheney. On Monday, a White House spokesman tried to deflect blame for the incident, saying the man who Cheney shot was partly to blame for not following hunting protocol. Grassley says he has every faith in the V.P.

Grassley says “I would believe that what Cheney says about it is very accurate. I don’t know whether it’s somebody that’s reflecting Cheney’s views that you quoted or somebody trying to make an excuse and I don’t think Cheney’s a guy that would seek an excuse. I think he’d be very candid about it.” Seventy-eight-year-old Harry Whittington, a millionaire Austin lawyer, is listed in stable condition after Cheney hit him in the face, neck and chest with a shotgun blast while hunting quail in Texas.
